Atopic dermatitis or Eczema is a type of itching dermatitis characterised by pruritus and chronicity on the skin associated with oedema.  The Eczema means flowing over.

Common inflammatory changes like heat, redness, swelling, pain and loss of function may be seen.

It is often seen in babies and young children but eczema can occur in any age.


CAUSES OF ECZEMA

Eczema is caused by a combination of immune system activation, genetics, environmental triggers and stress.

Contact with various agent may give rise to eczema e. g. acids, alkalies, lipstick, nail varnish, hair dyes, plants or flowers. Other factors like dietetic (Egg and milk) and exacerbating factors (heat, humidity, dryness) also play important role.

ATOPIC DERMATITIS

Atopic dermatitis is most common form of eczema when people refer to eczema they usually mean atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis happen when your skin’s natural barrier against the elements is weakened. This mean your skin is less able to protect you against irritants and allergens.

ALLERGIC CONTACT DERMATITIS

This is very common form of eczema a skin reaction that occurs following contact with substance or allergen that the immune system recognizes as foreign.

NEURODERMATITIS

This leads to scaly patches of skin on the head, forearms, wrists, and lower legs. Those have this type of eczema develop skin irritation in spots.

NUMMULAR DERMATITIS

This type of eczema often affects men then women. In this type of eczema causes round Coin shaped spot to form on skin. It can itch a lot. It is known as discoid eczema.

STASIS DERMATITIS

Stasis dermatitis is usually related to the circulatory problem and it happen when fluid leaks out of weakened veins into your skin. This fluid causes swelling, redness, itching, and pain.


SYMPTOMS OF ECZEMA

The symptoms of eczema can vary depending on the age of person. Most common symptoms of eczema are

Skin infection – From the scratching again and again that break the skin can causes open sores. This increases the risk of infection from bacteria and virus.

Loss of sleep – because of itching

Scarring – in case of eczema scar may be present long time

Following tips may help prevent from dermatitis

Moisturize your skin – moisturize skin with coconut oil that work well for your skin and prevent development of dermatitis, itching and from dryness. Oil may be apply 2 – 4 times a day.

Use gentle soap – choose mild soaps. Avoid antibacterial and deodorant soap can remove natural oils and dry your skin.

Avoid triggers -  Avoid triggers that worsen the condition like sweat, soap, stress, dust.

Take shorter bath or shower – take short baths with 10 to 15 minutes with lukewarm water avoid hot water which reduce the natural oils and produce dryness.

Drink plenty of water – drink plenty of water about 10 -12 glasses per day maintain your skin hydrated. Drinking less amount of water in itself is a cause for developing dry skin.

Maintain diet – a gluten free diet recommended for recovery from eczema use green leafy vegetables, salad and banana in daily diet.
